How to Prepare

Please do prepare for the backpacking trip. We will be hiking several miles each day, and you will be expected to carry all your personal gear and some of the group’s gear.  Preparing for the trip is not difficult but will take some time and effort.

First, you need to walk. Walk 2 to 3 times a week for at least 8 weeks before the trip. Start small and work your way up to 5 or 6 miles at a time. Also, make sure that you walk where there are hills and valleys to strengthen your muscles for the mountains and passes that we’ll climb.

Second, you need to prepare yourself for carrying weight as you walk. Again, begin small by carrying only a few pounds; then slowly add weight until you’re comfortable carrying about 40 pounds.

Finally, wear the hiking boots and backpack that you plan to bring to STU as you train. There’s nothing worse than getting out on the trail, far from civilization, and having ill-fitting boots or pack! Walk/hike with both before you come so that you know that you can hike 25 miles comfortably in both.
